It's that time of year; the time when we pull the Christmas boxes from the attic and begin to sort. Inavariably we end up finding a broken ornament or two; and our natural instinct is to just throw it away. Over the next few weeks, as we travel through the Advent season, we'll be looking at some broken ornaments in the lineage of Jesus. People like Tamar and Rahab and Ruth and Bathsheba and Mary. People whose lives were full of broken promises, broken reputations, broken moral choices, broken families and broken pasts. Their storeies remind us that God never discards what is broken; instead, He redeems, He restores, and uses it to turn messes into messages.
