The Church with Open Arms
Psalm 51:1-12; Romans 5:8
David's prayer in Psalm 51 is one of the most honest cries in all of Scripture. He did not dress up his failure or minimize his sin. He came before God exactly as he was, broken and desperate for mercy. Romans 5:8 reminds us that God did not wait for us to get ourselves together before He acted on our behalf. While we were still in our sin, Christ died for us. That is the kind of love the church is called to reflect. Not a love that waits for people to clean up before they are welcomed, but a love that meets people in the mess and walks with them toward healing. This is what it means to be the Well of Hope.
Personal Reflection: Is there someone in your life you have been waiting to extend grace to until they show signs of change?
Practical Application: Identify one practical way your church community can extend open arms to a family, child, or individual in your neighborhood who is far from God. Commit to taking one step toward that this week.
