Grace That Finds Us First

Reading: Romans 5:6-8, where Paul describes how God demonstrated his love by sending Christ to die for us while we were still living in sin, not after we had cleaned ourselves up.

Devotional: The woman in Luke 7 did not arrive at Simon's house because she had it all together. She arrived because something was already working in her heart before she ever walked through that door. Theologians call this prevenient grace -- the grace of God that goes before us, drawing us toward him before we even know we are looking. She did not earn her way to the feet of Jesus. She was led there. This is the nature of God's love. It does not wait for us to become worthy. It moves toward us in our unworthiness and calls us by name. You are not here today by accident.

Reflection Questions:
  • Can you identify moments in your life when God was clearly drawing you to himself before you fully recognized it?
  • How does the reality of prevenient grace change the way you view people who have not yet come to faith?
  • What would it mean for your church community to be a place where that drawing grace is visible and tangible?
