Hospitality and the Heart of God

Reading: Hebrews 13:1-2 and Luke 14:12-14, where Scripture calls believers to practice genuine hospitality, particularly toward those who cannot repay them, reflecting the generous character of God.

Devotional: Simon offered Jesus none of the customary signs of welcome. No water for his feet. No greeting kiss. No oil for his head. And yet he had invited Jesus into his home. It is entirely possible to invite Jesus in while withholding the very warmth that reflects his character. The woman, by contrast, gave everything she had. True hospitality is not about a clean house or a prepared meal. It is about a prepared heart -- one that is willing to receive whoever God sends through the door without conditions, without prerequisites, and without requiring that they first become someone more acceptable. The table of grace has no dress code.

Reflection Questions:
  • What conditions, spoken or unspoken, might you place on who is truly welcome in your home or your church?
  • What would radical, grace-filled hospitality look like in your specific community and neighborhood?
  • How can you practice one tangible act of unconditional welcome this week?
