The Older Brother Outside the Party
Luke 15:25-32 -- The older son, who has remained faithful, grows angry when his father celebrates the return of his younger brother, and refuses to come inside.
The older brother did everything right, and yet he stood outside the party with his arms crossed. He said to his father, in effect, I love you, but I do not like who you love. This is the quiet danger of religious pride. You can be near the house of God and still be far from the heart of God. The Pharisees in Luke 15 were not outside the faith in their own minds. They were the insiders. But Jesus reveals that their gatekeeping had placed them outside the celebration. Grace is not a reward for good behavior. It is a gift freely given to all. When we forget that, we stop being bridges and start building walls.
Reflection: Is there anyone in your life whom you have quietly decided does not deserve grace? How does the older brother's story challenge that judgment?
Application: Identify one person you have been slow to welcome. Pray for them by name today and ask God to give you his heart for them.
